Agarkar, Kambli in World Cup 19 probables

The chairman of the national selection committee Ajit Wadekar did not have to field too many tricky questions at the media conference room, Wankhede Stadium. In less than two hours his committee had executed the task in hand without any major hitch. It was more like ''eliminating'' one- third of 30 World Cup probables. Yet, it is gathered that the five selectors were not unanimous in the choice of the only left arm spinner they picked in the list of 19 probables. A division might have been avoided only to tell the world that it was a collective decision. In the end it turned out to be a joke that an experienced left arm spinner like Sunil Joshi was omitted and Uttar Pradesh's Gyanendra Pandey was chosen. Now, Joshi may not be a classic left arm spinner and a world beater. But he has gone through the grind of playing international cricket, gained experience and has held his place as a useful allrounder. If the selectors wanted to pick a left arm spinner-allrounder, Joshi should have been the No. 1 choice. They have, however, opted for Pandey, who is a gritty batsman and an ordinary left arm spinner. Pandey's inclusion in the squad of 19, was apparently insisted upon by two selectors, Anil Deshpande (Central Zone) and Ashok Malhotra (East Zone). There was no support for him from the other three selectors and coach Anshuman Gaekwad and Mohammad Azharuddin. ''We have selected the 19 probables keeping in mind the weather conditions in England in May and June. The World Cup is going to be played in the first half when it will be biting cold there. The weather will be more challenging than the teams. It will be very difficult for the spinners to grip the ball. We have tried to pick as many allrounders as possible,'' said Wadekar. The inclusion of Vinod Kambli and Ajit Agarkar became certain once they were certified fit by physical trainer Andrew Kokinos and Dr. Ravinder Chaddha. ''The report on both of them is good,'' said Mr. Jaywant Lele, Hon. Secretary, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). ''We have not included them (Kambli and Agarkar) in the team for the final of the Asian Test Championship (should India qualify) because we wanted them to rest for some more days. But the fitness reports from Kokinos and Dr. Chaddha say that both (Kambli and Agarkar) can play international cricket,'' said Wadekar. On choosing Nayan Mongia as the only wicketkeeper, Wadekar said that he (Mongia) was India's only wicketkeeper in New Zealand. ''And he did a good job. Well, we can always rush a replacement should he get injured during the World Cup or before that. We have Saba Karim and M. S. K. Prasad in the list of 30 probables.'' A left hand bat himself, Wadekar had a lot of good words for Sadagopan Ramesh, the Tamil Nadu batsman, who scored heavily in four Tests. ''He will be viewed strictly as an opening batsman. It is the position he has made all the runs. I think he is very positive in his attitude, confident and has shown good temperament. He has to develop the square cut and the hook, but he is a backfoot player which makes up for these shots.'' About captain Azharuddin, the chairman said ''I think he is doing a good job. The team has been losing by small margins. We will appoint the captain for the World Cup when we actually pick the 15 players. We have two more tournaments to be played before the World Cup.'' Mr. Lele said that the 15 member team for the World Cup would be picked on March 31. ''Should there be an injury to any of the 15 players between April 1 and May 14 and during the World Cup, a two man committee appointed by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will see their medical reports, talk to the team physio and doctor and permit a change. Players can be replaced only for injuries. We can choose a player from the first list of 30 probables.'' The Indian team will leave for London on April 23 and practice at Leicestershire till May 5. ''The Board will bear the expenses from April 24 to May 5. Mr. Bobby Simpson will also help the team in its training programmes in England,'' said Mr. Lele.
